We see a lot people growing frustrated over not being able to stick to their regular spa schedules right now. And we get it. At Flash Lab, we keep our clients on a program for a reason. Skincare is all about strategy and when you have a good plan in place, you don’t want to skip your treatments. But in a world where that’s not possible, we have to find ways to keep our skin on track. Lucky for us, there’s a pretty solid solution to this problem: Retinol.
Retinol is a synthetic derivative of Vitamin A. When applied topically, it interacts with enzymes in the skin and converts to retinoic acid which accelerates the rate of cell turnover and stimulates collagen production. This combination of skin benefits can significantly improve and prolong the effects of services we do in the spa. However successful retinol implementation requires a commitment. So you’ll want to start sooner than later!
Retinol can produce skin that is dramatically brighter, healthier and younger in appearance but unfortunately, this exfoliating face treatment can be harsh at first, causing breakouts, dryness, redness and irritation as your skin adjusts to the product, making some of our clients hesitant to start at all. But seeing as most of us have nothing but downtime these days, why not take this opportunity to find your formula?
On your next trip to the drug store, check out the great beginner brands below. Remember, the key with retinol is to start with a low percentage and build up usage over time. Start with one application the first week. Then two applications per week for two weeks after that, eventually increasing to three to four times a week. It can take up to two months for your skin to adjust. Which means if you start now, you’ll be looking your best when we’re all back to business!
Differin Adapalene Gel 0.1% Acne Treatment – great for cleaning out acneic skin leading to less breakouts and smaller pores but exfoliating enough for people looking for a great beginner product for fine lines and wrinkles.
Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Night Moisturizer – great as an anti-aging treatment, this serum also contains ultra hydrating hyalauronic acid to combat dryness.
Versed Press Restart Retinol Serum – great for sensitive skin, this product teams a low dose version of retinol with its naturally-derived cousin bakuchiol to deliver benefits without irritation.
PCA Retinol Treatment For Sensitive Skin – ok, you won’t find this at the drugstore but we’re throwing it in anyway because we love PCA products. This more advanced treatment is great for people who have already adjusted to lower percentage formulas and want to step up their dosage. Great for acne, brightening, fine lines and wrinkles.
Remember, the hardest thing about using retinol is staying the course! Don’t let any initial discomfort keep you from continuing. If you start using retinol now, you’ll ease the burden that a break from your MedSpa schedule can have on your skin!
* While some form of retinol can be great for most skin types, if you have especially sensitive skin, rosacea or eczema, Flash Lab recommends you consult a dermatologist before starting a retinol routine.
Enjoy your fresher skin and we’ll see you at the Suite soon enough!
